What is in your mind, however, are thoughts about tables, chairs, telephones, and snowstorms. Being mindful means paying attention to your thoughts and emotions, and it is through mindfulness that we can overcome the thoughts and emotions that prevent us from running. Distinguishing the World from Your Attitudes about the World Thoughts and emotions aren’t the only things in your mind. Your mind also contains memories that can affect the way you think about things outside your mind. For instance, suppose as a thirteen-year-old you had a bad experience with a doll.

Your list might be similar to mine, or maybe, unlike me, you like running in the afternoon but don’t enjoy morning runs. That’s fine. All I’m asking you to do now is come up with a list of reasons why you don’t like to run at some given time of day. Remember to make the items on your list consist of only things in your mind—thoughts, feelings, emotions, and so on. Being mindful means concentrating on what’s in your mind, not on what’s outside it. We can control what’s going on in our mind, but that’s not always true of things going on outside it.
